Peter Mel is one of those rare double entendres who dominates not just the small surf, but the big waves as well. To complete the trifecta, he’s also starting to become a regular on the webcast commentary scene, recently completing the double play as both a competitor and the primary webcast commentator for the Jeep Body Glove Surfbout contest held at Lower Trestles.

Before Maverick’s became a household name in the mid-’90s, Peter Mel looked like he’d slip into relative anonymity — a semi-successful pro surfer turned Santa Cruz shaper. As it was, he was on Mav’s every time it broke, rising to prominence along with California’s most famous big wave.

So when Santa Cruz heavies Adam Replogle, Daryl “Flea” Virostko, Shawn “Barney”Barron and Anthony Ruffo all deemed Peter Mel as the winner of the second Red Bull 5X surf contest, you can consider their call indisputable.
